Healthier Together Cookbook Review #Q15

You know I love me a cookbook - I read them for funsies. There are tons of healthy* cookbooks out there but sometimes, they just aren’t the bee’s knees - ya know? Personally, the Selfies’ weird 1980s kitchen has a garbage compactor but not a PANTRY. Thus, Mr. Selfie does not just let me store sundries in cute little jars or whatever and regularly, cleans out the cupboards of whatever random ingredients. If I gotta run back and forth to Whole Foods because I don’t have like…bee pollen powder, I’m going to be annoyed.

Healther Together is a new fav because it calls mostly for items I actually have in my kitchen AND has delicious, amazing recipes, of course. The premise of the book is super fun too - the idea is that you’ll rope in a partners: your spouse/partner, sibling, parent, friend, etc., and create recipes together and because the recipes include whole food versions of your favs, you’ll be healthier….together. The book is split up into chapters that describe the type of food and the difficulty level so from cheap and easy to decadent and of course, ending with desserts.

Best Healthy Cookie

I started with the “Best Healthy Cookie Recipe:” which turned out delicious and I’ve made them every week since I got the book. I will say that the recipe indicates the recipe makes 6-8 cookies but when I make them that way, they come out GINORMOUS. I’m not complaining about this because the cookies come out perfect - chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside. However, they look literally nothing like the picture so I tried to make them a bit smaller, which changes the consistency but those were Mr. Selfie’s favorite batch.

Thai Satay Salad

This is also a recipe I’ve made multiple times and in fact, this is my meal prepped lunch for the week . Besides living a salad that won’t get soggy, I’m also a fan of how easy this dressing was to modify - I don’t have maple syrup and like to save some cals at lunch. But regardless of the modification/ Selfie laziness, this is SO tasty and incredibly simple to make. I could definitely see this for a date night dinner with wine, too!

Cornflake Chicken + Carrot Fries

In scrolling through my photos, I realized that I made this last week as a special date night dinner and took absolutely no photos of this but I swear! It was made! And it was tasty as heck. This is certainly a more labor-intensive recipe but well worth it. It’s also supposed to pair with a delicious Cole slaw but I was looking for a grown up version of chicken tenders and fries and so a flip to the cocktail section got me carrot fries! We’ve actually made the carrot fries twice already because they come out crispy and delicious (if you follow the recipe).

Portobello Eggs Hollsandaise

So this is one I modified, as well. This recipe is supposed to be a turmeric eggs Benedict and while I’m sure it’s absolutely delicious, I don’t have ghee, don’t really eat butter and don’t love hollandaise sauce. I DO however love me the hell out of over easy eggs on almost anything. I’ve also been weirdly obsessed with smoked salmon since the Christmas break my MIL busted out bagels and lox. Give me allllll the smoked salmon. For an easy breakfast (even on a Monday!), I threw this recipe together and it’s a great, plant-heavy alternative from my daily breakfast tacos.

I know a cookbook is one I’ll love if I can have a range of easy to complex recipes with ingredients I have or will actually use. In addition, any cookbook with recipes that turn out delicious even if I don’t follow it to the letter, *literal chef’s kiss .

As a final note, my pro tip for cookbooks is to try them out from the library first so you don’t just get swayed by a pretty cover. That’s what I did with this one but after make all these recipes in a couple weeks (more than once!), it’s on its way from Amazon as we speak.
