Selfie Does LashLiner Review

Selfie tried, y’all

Selfie tried, y’all

I don’t know if this week should be a “Selfie Does” cuz like ya girl, Selfs, didn’t “do” anything. She tried real hard. Short backstory*: I wear a lot of false eyelashes and have successfully applied said falsies since the year 2003. I am not, therefore, a novice in the art of applying eyeliners. And therefore, I’m well acquainted with the downsides like when you mess up the placement and destroy your makeup replacing it. Or how there is still glue in your lashes no matter how carefully you clean them. Or how your lid can sometimes stick to your crease. etc. They are beautiful. They are sometimes expensive**. They are not quick because of how precise you have to be. Okay, well, Selfs, why don’t you take your first world problems and get some eyelash extensions. I do once a year but the thing is, it’s expensive and more importantly, it’s suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper hard on your real lashes. Do my real lashes all fall out? No. I know some people’s do. But I also only keep them on for a couple months and the grow-out is not cute. That brings us here. As context, I wake up at 5:30 in the morning and have quite a commute. I also have a conservative job and I’m just not about that life where my eyelashes are too dramatic or are popping off in a committee meeting, ya heard? But I miss my eyelashes! So I went in search of something quick but not damaging. Distinct but natural and landed on the various variations of the magnetic liner + magnetic eyelashes. In the videos, they look so simple and the real sway is that my favorite beauty YouTuber*** tried these and liked them so, I took the plunge.

The Product: LashLiner

The Cost: $55 (1 Liner + 1 Set of Eyelashes)

The Bottom Line: C -Do Not Recommend

Before

Before

I waited a while to buy these because $55 is a stupid amount to spend on a set of eyelashes but at some point - if these actually worked, I would be happy to pay that to have a little oomph in my everyday look but as my 12 followers who actually watch my IG stories^ know, this ended up as a disappointment. If you watch any of the brand’s videos or any similar product (moxielash, glamlash, etc.) what you get is a set of lashes with small magnets on the band which stick magically to eyeliner that is also magnetic. Great!

Trial 1:

I knew from watching videos that the eyeliner is kind of tough to get on straight (it’s really thick) and the brush isn’t great. So, I put on regular liner first and then put on the magnetic liner second. After reading the directions, I put on a thin line of the magnetic liner on and waited 30 seconds. I then added another coat and waited a minute. I tried to put on the lashes…nothing. Okay, well, the box says if it doesn’t work, add another coat.^^ This is what I did and then, the magic…kind of happened. It did stick on my eye. It didn’t stick on the other eye on one end. When I tried to adjust them, it pulled off the liner. I tried to fill the liner. The lash band still stuck up in a weird angle. I was…very disappointed. They kept popping up when I took pictures later.

Trial 2:

After - you can see the band sticking out on that right eye.

After - you can see the band sticking out on that right eye.

I finally realized that I should use the tiny anchor pieces that came with the lashes. So, after dropping like four of them^^^, I finally got some anchors stuck on the underside my lashes to clamp down the top lash band. This was successful on one eye. On the other eye, the little anchor stuck out and then, the band stuck out and my regular eyelashes popped out between them. The fine people of H.E.B. got a bit of show.+ It was a step in the right direction but I had spent like an hour trying to get these to work.

Trial 3:

The next day, I started from scratch. I had a long run and then, had a super short turn around to meet my friends for coffee. So I took what I had learned. 1) I put just the lashliner line on so I could make sure that it was going on smoothly and nothing was interfering with it. 2) I followed directions exactly. Voila! The lashes went on. It took only a couple minutes. The same band popped up again and I wrangled it with an anchor and headed out the door. I was psyched up for like…four more minutes but then as things dried, the other band popped up and I had already left my house. So then I just got to continually push them down.

Trial 4:

I wanted to give these another ol’ college try, so when I got home, I added some more anchors. These too popped up after a couple hours.

The Final Verdict.

Things that are positive: They are pretty lashes. My friend who I met up with said they looked very pretty. She did notice when I pointed out the places they weren’t sticking. They DO stick to the liner… That’s all I got

the bands are pretty noticeable here but I had just re-stuck them

the bands are pretty noticeable here but I had just re-stuck them

The Negatives: The price. The fact that they don’t stay on for very long. Regular glued-on lashes last AWHILE. If there’s some level of learning curve - fine. But I tried 4 different times and I really tried to take my time. The eyeliner is so thick and the brunch isn’t very nice so if it really is a matter of only using this liner, you are not getting a nice, precise line. It’s really difficult to take off and you end up with magnetic flakes all over your face. The whole purpose was to have something quick and natural looking for work at 6 a.m. and if it’s a wobbly thick line with lash bands popping off by 7 am, it’s just not going to cut it.

Alright, so, I tried! Have you tried any lash alternatives that you love? Tried any products that you’ve seen great reviews on that disappointed you? Lmk in the comments!

*Lie! None of my stories are short.

**I love Lily Lashes and those bad boys are $30 a pop. Huda’s are $25 and the Sephora brand ones I like are $15 - $30. But even at $15 a pair and plenty of reuse, if you have a drawer full…it’s $$$$.

^Which you should! On Sundays, Mr. Selfie has a cooking show! Sometimes I made Papa Jose pretend to drink wine and give reviews! Come on over - @selfiedoes

^^At this point, I’m wearing like 5 layers of eyeliner which is a bold choice

^^^They are reaaaaaaaally small and I have long nails right now. Thankfully, they provide 8 of them but I finally realized I needed to use tweezer. But the pieces are magnetic and stick to or repel from the tweezers so. *exasperated sigh *

+The nice thing about this…like all things, is that other people could not care less about you or me or my wonky magnetic eyelashes so who cares?
