FitOn Review

What I learned about myself recently was… “Uh, oh. Is this another post where you talk about yourself?” Umm, yeah, Susan. This is literally my website. Anyhoodles, I’m far more motivated in my fitness routine by changing what the goal is. For example, I have the FitBody app on my phone but the idea of doing that for 52 weeks, while it would be an amazing accomplishment, sounds super boring. I was listening to a podcast* and it suggested planning out your fitness routines for the full year. So literally planning ahead as to how you intend to mix it your workoutsand it was such a lightbulb. I knew I wanted to ease into a more workable/shorter routine while I ramp up my morning routine. And I also know that when I’m not used to getting up at 5:20, I need a workout I can easily follow so I can just be in Robot mode. So I googled “workout videos” and “free” and landed on FitOn.

What is FitOn? FitOn is a fitness app with a huge variety of workouts from barre to barbells. They also have workout programs.

How Does it Work? FitOn is video-based so you simply sign up and pick what videos you want to watch.

Are They Separate Workouts or Programs? Actually both. You sign up and take a survey about what you’re looking to use the app for (i.e. weightloss) , for how long (4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, indefinitely), how may days a week (2-5+) and the app picks a program for you. I was doing the slimdown. I think if you choose weight loss as a goal, you’ll end up in the Slim Down. The program will then pick videos to match whatever number of workouts you want to do - for me, that was five.

How Much Does it Cost? Literally nothing. I kept being perplexed like…don’t you want to send me an ad for like protein powder? Or a premium program of some sort? Or a fitness tracker? I do not understand their business model at all. I finally got an ad for FitOnPro were you get meal plans, fitbit integration and the ability to download workouts a two full months after using it. And if that program is only $60 for the year. It’s pretty crazy to me and a heck of a value if you’re looking for something like that. (For reference, workout/meal plan apps I’ve had in the past cost $!00 and the comprehensive meal plan I bought pre-app days was $150. Lauren Gleisberg’s is like $50).

What are the Best Things About FitOn? Umm, the complete lack of cost and there are SO many workouts. So many. And so many types - strength, yoga, barre, dance, gym, pilates, at work, prenatal, postnatal, cardio, toning. And the talent they have includes the incredibly popular Popilates’s Casey Ho and Celebrity Trainer Jeannette Jenkins. For the New Year, they added Gabrielle Union and Jonathan Van Ness. I counted 20 different trainers. It’s super impressive.

What Didn’t You Like? Some of the videos can be really gimmicky. Like having Gabrielle Union and JVN there for three and five-minute videos feels as unnecessary as Ron Swanson doing the sleep stories on the Calm App. Like I get it, it’s a pull, but realistically it’s not adding anything to the actual product.

More importantly, I did five weeks of the program and I had planned to do the full 8-week program but I got to the point where they just weren’t challenging enough - too many breaks, too much set up and too much talking. I have a really limited time to workout and I need it to be both efficient and effective to hit my fitness goals.

I also didn’t like how random the Slim Down program seemed. Sometimes you’d have four HIIT workouts and sometimes you have back to back leg-focused days. A traditional program that you pay for normally has some version of: Upper Body, Lower Body and Total Body and then fills in the rest with cardio. I also didn’t like that I specifically noted that I don’t like certain workouts (Dance and Barre) but they still ended up in my weekly videos.

Who is This Best For?: Definitely if you love videos, love free stuff and especially if you’re starting a fitness routine for the first time in awhile or ever - this is so beginner friendly and I think that’s awesome. I do love the videos and I’ll chat up this app. It just did such a good job being what I needed to be that I decided to graduate early.

*The Jordan Syatt Minipodcast - seriously check him out. He’s hilarious and points out some obvious way to overcome health/weight/fitness anxieties that a lot people have. Also he talks about Harry Potter a lot and I’m into that.
