Selfie Does Trainer Talk with Jami: NY Resolution Mistakes
In the last couple of years, I’ve developed a habit of trying to change 100 things at once, getting overwhelmed and wondering where I went wrong (sound familiar?). I do this even though I know that it’s much easier to focus on one goal at a time but it is hard not to get swept up in the enthusiasm of a new start. Jami Munsch is a long-time fitness professional, great friend, brilliant adviser and all-around badass with a big heart who, as a personal trainer, has seen a resolution or two (thousand). So, when I went to get advice from someone who can even out the whole IT’S-NEW-YEAR’S-LET’S-DO-THIS!! energy with a real-deal look at what it takes, not just to set your goals, but to sidestep the landmines so many of us face come February or March, I turned to Jami So without further ado:
Trainer Jami’s Top 10 NY Resolutions Mistakes and How to Avoid Them:
Resolution Mistake Number One: You Set Too Many Goals
Often times, people put too much on their plate in January with regards to their goals. Just a pick a few key goals that really inspire you.
Resolution Mistake Number Two: Your Goals are Unreasonable
If you’re not a gym person and you set a goal getting to the gym five days a week, you probably won’t succeed in the long run. Choose goals that are challenging but not overwhelming to your current environment.
Resolution Mistake Number Three: Your Goals Can’t Be Easily Measured
Typically, people will say “I want to be happier” or “I want to be healthier,” but they don’t define what that means to them. Those goals are different for everyone. Dig in and find out what it means to be happier and healthier. What are those concrete things you are looking to achieve?
Resolution Mistake Number Four: You Don’t Write Down or Track Your Goals
Tracking your progress throughout your journey will allow you to see short-term success that will keep you motivated. It will also allow you to adjust your plan based on your progress.
Resolution Mistake Number Five: You Don’t Share Your Goals With Others
It is important to create a healthy environment of people who will support you in your goals. Choose people who will be honest and supportive of your progress.
Resolution Mistake Number Six: You Don’t Have a Game Plan That is Specific
Most people create goals based on the outcome they desire but don’t follow up with a specific plan to reach those goals. Create a road map to your end destination. You wouldn’t drive to New York City from Texas without a map so don’t try and teach goals without a detailed plan —> PLAN YOUR WORK
Resolution Mistake Number Seven: Follow Through With Your Plan
It is one thing entirely to create a plan, but it is another to work your plan. You can do this by checking in daily and weekly with your plan—> WORK YOUR PLAN
Resolution Mistake Number Eight: You Don’t Expect Setbacks
People will have setbacks and things that derail themselves from their plan. You should have a plan in place to correct for that. Create an environment in which it’s okay to have setbacks and make mistakes. Being realistic about the fact that setbacks happen, also allows you to have a strategy to get right back on track with your plan. You can always pick right back up and keep moving towards your goals. Remember: One extra cookie doesn’t mean you have failed and you should give up.
Resolution Mistake Number Nine: You Lose Focus
When this happens, revisit those goals and WHY you wanted to reach them. This will get you back on track.
Resolution Mistake Number Ten: You Don’t Ask for Help
Not everyone knows what you need all the time. Create an environment that allows people to support you along the way. For example, if you want to save more money and your significant other always wants to eat out, then maybe you can do something else - like take a healthy cooking class together or try cooking a new fun recipe together.
**Trainer Jami Bonus Mistake: You Don’t Address What Emotional Needs are Driving Your Change
It is important to assess why you want to achieve your goals. It is the WHY behind those goals that is going to keep you motivated. Always remember the WHY and you will get where you want to be.
