Selfie Does the New Year
Real Talk, 2019:
I love the New Year, I really do. I love the opportunity to reflect on future goals, reset from the holiday season (umm, hello and goodbye all the wine and cheese) and plan for the next upcoming year. I know that plenty of people think the New Year is cheesy – scrolling through our Instagram feeds with nothing but platitudes like “Today is page 1 of 365” and “New Year, New You” followed by making elaborate resolutions that will be given up by February 1st. But I just don’t see it like that. First, because I love dreaming big dreams, goal-setting and making detailed plans of attack almost as much as I love achieving goals. And secondly, because I am someone who has been able to achieve big dreams I’ve set for myself and know that it’s super possible.
So for the next week, I’ll be posting every day about different aspects of New Years’ resolutions - from goal-setting, to common mistakes, to things that have helped me stay focused and or organize and a how-to on a lot of people’s big goal: running your first half marathon. I feel that a new year is a good opportunity to stop and reflect. Are you looking to pull the thread up to where you stopped being who you really are and reset it? I know I am but I also know I’m a woman who has random, impossible dreams and achieves them. I am a woman who runs marathon and climbs mountains. And I - like literally everyone else - am a woman who has faced heartbreak and frustration and failure and kept going. And quite frankly, I’ve had a lot of help and support in doing so and would like to pay some of that forward.
Because the truth is, the narrative that you keep repeating to yourself about who you really are is only true if you continue to DO those things. Are you a runner if you do not run? A scuba diver if you no longer dive? A music lover if you no longer listen? A dreamer if you no longer hope to dream? Mr. Selfie – who is very wise (but…like…please don’t tell him I said that) always says love is an action. And he’s right but I’d like to take it one step further and say LIFE is an action. “LIVE” is a verb. Are you who you want to be today? Will you be tomorrow?
I get why people think the New Year is cheesy especially if you only give yourself space to dream once a year. But I love it because I know you don’t need to wait until January 1st to start a new goal or restart or restart again. You can start a new dream today, or tomorrow, or June 3rd or October 29th because quite simply, why not you? And if every day is an adventure, why not now?
