Selfie Does Lake Tahoe
The name “Selfie” originated during a trip to Nepal because my name can be hard to say for people who speak other languages (and children and like…everyone on the phone thinks my name is Sophia or Sonia or Sibya which is….not a human name but okay.) Another byproduct of that trip was beautiful friendships with some of the best freaking people I’ve ever met. One those beautiful, amazing friends is Mel who invited us for a weekend in Lake Tahoe.
We started our weekend in Truckee, CA which is a quintessential, old mountain town that has cute shops and plenty of great food. A hike above Donner Lake yielded not just beautiful views but also, a behind-the-scene look at how car commercials get those beautiful mountain pass shots (Umm. They strap the photographer into the back of a hatchback with the trunk open and then drive down a ridiculously curvy road. It was crazy sauce.) The tragic Camp Wildfire meant that there was a general haze over the sky but certainly, the beauty of the area couldn’t be denied. We also were able to squeeze in a hike in the Lake Tahoe Emerald Bay-area and we were completely absorbed in the rugged desolation of the Sierra Nevadas juxtaposed with huge pinewoods with the stunning, seemingly unending beauty of the lake as a consistent back drop.
Sunday was my very favorite part of the trip when we hung out at the Tahoe Treetop Adventure Course. Real talk: I wouldn’t say I’m afraid of heights, but I will say that I have…an appropriate respect for them (which is just code for “I’m freaking afraid of heights but have serious FOMO and just do all the crazy things anyways). Having never even been ziplining before meant being that far off the ground and attached to a tree and climbing across netting or hopping across logs suspended in the air a couple dozen feet off the ground was not like, my first choice. But MAN, was it fun! Also, I learned that there is literally no way to gracefully take off on a zip line (nor do I possess any skill which allows me to stop gracefully either so…scrapes and bruises and hilarious video). But the epic beauty of the majestic pine trees and the exhilaration of what amounted to essentially immersion therapy for acrophobia certainly made our Sunday a more-than-everyday adventure.
