Podcasts #Q15

I’m sure you got this memo but I’m a huge nerd who loves wellness. Well, wellness and wine. Wine can be part of your wellness routine, right? Anyways, part of my research about losing the wellness world includes listening to a ton of podcasts on that topic. I drive quite a bit during the week so I like to mix up my listening between Audible, podcasts and Folklore. Just on repeat. All the time. Driving Mr. Selfie crazy.

At any rate, because most people with a book to promote end up doing a lot of podcasts, I end up getting my reading list so you’ll probably note so overlap. Also, I used to listen to Rise, Rise Together and the now-defunct Start Today podcasts but it actually got to be a bit of a strain listening to people complain about quarantine every day at the beginning of Quarantine. The way that I find new podcasts now is by searching for episodes with people I find interesting - while scrolling through episodes on apple can be a pain, this is how I found two of my fav new podcasts.

Favorite Wellness Podcasts

Healthier Together

In attempting to fill the void left by my previous favorite podcasts, I stumbled upon Liz Moody and the Healthier Together podcast. Liz is a cookbook author and former food director for Mind Body Green. This podcast is both incredibly informative and hilarious. As a host, Liz asks really great questions but also, really lets the guests shine and while not every guest resonates with me, something about every episode does. For example, Glennon Doyle is not necessarily my cup of tea but the interview was great and Mr. Selfie and I had some great conversations from having listened to it. I especially love the episode with my favorite cookbook author - Laura Lea. If I had one complaint, it’s that new episodes only come out every other Wednesday but thankfully, it’s still new to me so there’s a lot of backlog to get through.

Be Well by Kelly

Kelly Leveque is a holistic nutrition coach that I first heard of on the Rise podcast. Her podcast is new this year and just so informative and interesting. This podcast has made me uncover things I didn’t even know I was super interested in like regenerative farming, fiber and grass-fed AND finished beef. Kelly comes from a science background and so lends a lot of really well-researched interesting information. I would start with the podcast about - you guessed it - Dr. B and the importance of fiber. I love that Kelly’s format is to have Wednesdays be about wellness and Fridays about #fabulousfriends which mixes up the topics. My only complaint here? While the format is twice a week, Kelly is very pregnant and appears to have stepped away from uploads during this time.

The One You Feed

This is an old school favorite versus the other three that are newer. The premise is based on a parable wherein a grandson/daughter is talking with their grandfather. The grandfather says “ Inside each of us there are two wolves fighting- one who represents things like fear and hate and bad feelings and the another who represents things like love and wholeness and goodness.” The grandchild looks at the grandfather and asks, “Which one wins?” to which the grandfather replies, “The one you feed.” This podcast really highlights tangible breakthroughs related to blockages in our lives be it anxiety or jealousy or feeling lost. I listened to it about 5/6 years and it really resonated with me. I don’t listen quite as much to this podcast as I’m in a different headspace than I was back in 2014 and also, this material is a bit denser. However, if you normally listen to Ted Talks or This American Life or podcasts more of that il and are also interested in mental health and better living, I strongly recommend.

Unlocked with Brene Brown

I listened to the Power of Vulnerability last year and have seen Brene speak in person. I know she has a bit of a cult following which is not everyone’s cup of tea* and her style of communication is well-branded and particular to her but if you’re new to Brene or already like her, I really suggest starting with episode 1. This is also a fairly new podcast but really well done and I love any podcast that teaches me something and also, makes me laugh out loud. With her not-infrequent cussing and Brene-specific vernacular, in addition to her academic background and research, Brene brings a lot of information and personality to this space.

The Jordan Syatt Mini Podcasts

Jordan Syatt is a personal trainer, perhaps best known for his preaching of a simple calorie deficit “secret” to weight loss and the Big Mac challenge on Youtube. As far as fitness-specific podcasts, this is my fav and only. Jordan is hilarious and either tells stories on his own, answers people who disagree with him on instagram in his “Jordan Stinks” series or interviews his clients and answers any of their questions. More often than not it is - once again, very informative but also very, very funny.

I love a new podcast or a great podcast episode - please share a great one that you’ve listened to recently and I will check it out!

*Idk why I keep using this phrase but my cup of tea is cinnamon spice. It’s delicious.
